Artist Biography:
Serge Jolimeau was born in 1952 in the village of Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti. Immediately following high school, he worked for two years as an apprentice of steel-working, studying under Seresier Louis-Juste. Today, Jolimeau is one of Haiti's leading metal sculptors, and currently owns and operates his own metal-working studio where he creates many jobs in the local community. He is known specifically for his unique method of recycling discarded oil drums as his medium. He first flattens them and, using hammers and chisels, cuts the metal into fantastical designs that incorporate traditional Haitian Voudou symbols and deities, and also relies heavily on the sea culture for inspiration.
