Artist Biography:
Archibald J. Motley, Jr. was an African American painter who was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, later settling down in Chicago, Illinois. He studied painting at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago in the 1910s. He is most famous for his depictions of African American life in the early 21st century, and because of this is considered to be one of the major contributors to the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural explosion that drastically expanded and promoted African American art in the 1920s and '30s.
