Artist Biography:
Born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, William ‘Woody’ Joseph’s talent as an artist was not recognized by Jamaica’s art ‘cognicenti’ until fairly late in his life. Within his rural hometown, his art was looked upon with great curiosity, and he had even been accused of devil worship by several members of his community. The inspiration for Joseph’s work was largely ancestral, as his carvings represent archetypal forms that can be linked to an African heritage.
