Steve Frykholm has been designing the recognizable Herman Miller Summer Picnic promotional posters since he was hired in 1970. He began his artistic career four years earlier in Aba, Nigeria, where he taught commercial art at a government-run trade school for girls. Back in the United States, Frykholm attended an exhaustive study of silk screening, after which he finished his M.F.A. at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. For his first Herman Miller poster he placed a piece of corn on the cob in his mouth and had a colleague draw a quick sketch of it, using it to create a silk-screen print that would mark the beginning of an era. In 1980, seven of his posters were welcomed by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, New York (MoMA).
