Virginia Jenkins is a Professor and Department Chair of the Art and Design Department at Grand Valley State University (GVSU), starting in the position in August of 2008. Professor Jenkins has been teaching in art and design departments for over three decades and has held positions at other universities including the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Minnesota Duluth. Professor Jenkins has held several academic positions including: part-time adjunct faculty, full-time contingent faculty with the rank of Professor, full-time tenured faculty, and three Dept. Chair/Head positions at different universities. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Michigan State University in Painting and Drawing, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah. Governance involvement has included leadership participation at the department, college, and university levels in varied university governance systems at union and non-union campuses.
Her areas of specialty are in painting, drawing, and mixed media work. Her work is in several private and public collections in the United States. Landscape forms and images have been the primary focus of her work for over two decades. Other areas of research and academic involvement have included: history of women artists, history of artists of color, women studies, mythology in art, connections between science and art, international collaborative academic art projects, and academic governance.
