Mariko Mori is a Japanese video, performance, and photographic artist who currently lives and works in New York City. Often, Mori constructs works where she takes direct control over her own image; becoming an exotic alien creature, a futuristic robot girl, an ancient goddess, or a Shamanistic cyborg. The critique of consumerism and the juxtaposition of Eastern mythology and Western culture are recurring themes within Mori's work. By layering dramatic visual elements such as curvaceous metal environments, fantasy inspired photographs, and digitally constructed paradises displayed through video projections, Mariko Mori creates an experience that causes us to consider the relationship between ancient myth and contemporary technology in our everyday lives.
