Richard Cleaver is an American sculptor who mainly works with the human figure which he sculpts out of clay. He creates a story for each of his characters that is based off of his own personal experiences and historical events, mixed with that which is surreal. He received his B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 1977, and his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1980. Of his work he says that "These [images] are made complete with secret compartments which serve as hiding places for multiple and often times personal meanings...The figures are like actors on a stage, enigmatic yet tense while being enveloped or encrusted within layers of overgrowth concealing a world within."
