Gabriel Eklou was born in Ghana, but spent most of his youth in Togo. Eklou had originally went to school to be an accountant, but decided to follow his desires and became a painter. He was self taught, but was encouraged by many people throughout his life. His teachers in his early years let him help in class with drawing on the blackboard. He would also work on various art pieces that he would paint on ceiling boards.
