Artist Biography:
Jacob Lawrence was an African American painter whose artistic skill developed out of the Harlem Renaissance. Through his work he concentrated on depicting the history and struggles of African Americans. Lawrence referred to his style as "dynamic cubism", though his primary influences were the colors and shapes of Harlem as opposed to the traditional French art. In the 1940s, Lawrence was given his first major solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and became one of the most celebrated African American painters in the country.
