John August Swanson is an American artist of Mexican and Swedish descent born in Los Angeles, California, where he still lives today. He paints in oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media, and is an independent print maker. He strives to tell stories with his art, revealing religious and cultural messages rooted in human values. His subject matter can include Bible stories, social celebrations and activities of every day existence, among others. His style is influenced by traditional Islamic and medieval miniatures, Russian iconography, Latin American folk art and the Mexican muralists. He studied at the Immaculate Heart College, a private, Catholic college in Los Angeles.
