In 1890, Vuillard joined the Nabis, a group of art students inspired by the synthetism of Gauguin. In 1892, Vuillard painted his first decorations titled Apartment Frescoes for the house of Mme Desmarais. From this point forward Vuillard fulfilled many additional commissions of the nature. Vuillard's paintings and decorative pieces depict interiors, streets and gardens. Vuillard was first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants of 1901 and at the Salon d'Automne in 1903.
