Artist Statement on "The S.S.A. Soupmop":
This composition mimics Gustave Courbet’s 1854 composition “The Painter’s Studio," in which Courbet showcases himself on a massive canvas surrounded by his friends and adversaries as well as symbols relating to his life, work, and philosophy of art. The figures appearing behind me in this painting were friends of mine who embodied different influences on me and my painting at the time. This painting was meant to be a summation of my thoughts about art during my final year at Grand Valley, and meant to poke fun at myself for feeling so proud of my work and its importance.
