Historical Context: Patty Carroll received her BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and her MS degree in photography from The Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Techonology, Chicago. She started teaching at a small American art school but moved on to the Aegean School of Fine Arts in Paros, Greece, and later to full-time faculty at Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pennsylvania; the University of Michigan of Ann Arbor; and lastly her native IIT Institute of Design. Carroll was trained in traditional photography and most of her earlier work is considered to be of a documentary nature. She has also done extensive studio work. Her subject in this piece, Jeff Colby, is a fellow artist whose main artistic themes revolved around his personal and emotional struggles with HIV.
