"I am influenced by the way 17th century Dutch painters Jan Vermeer and Peiter de Hooch make paintings about transcendence through the activity of light, domestic spaces and precise formal relationships. My work combines some of these elements while pursuing the more directly metaphysical goals of some modernist painters, such as Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. For Newman, the canvas becomes a transformed thing, something that evokes the beyond. The painting becomes a vehicle for contemplation, for meditation."
