Historical Context:
"Certainly, this work is factored by the recent history of the city. Despite the rich coloration there is a sense that these colors have been unplugged and deprived of life. Green and red, opposites on the color wheel, probably refer to the conflict of ethnic groups which has characterized Sarajevo recently. Green and red are also the most important colors used in traditional landscape painting, along with neutrals like brown, gray and ocher. The sequence of units alludes to numerical order and geometrical pattern, against which the thick, impastoed brushwork seems to struggle." -Jane Everhart
