During a time of increasing urban industrialism in the United States, Alten continued to paint themes of agrarian labor. Alten's previous visit to the art colony of Old Lyme may have provided him with some earlier agrarian subject matter, but the majority was drawn from his home city and state of Grand Rapids, MI.
